The author's first book, which he claims he will never write again, was drawn from personal experience. Despite taking six years to write, the book's subject matter, the Great Depression and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), had been in the making for half a century. The CCC, a legislative masterstroke, helped millions of young men survive the Dirty Thirties, and in the process, they balanced their social debt. As the author reflects on this unique experience, he is puzzled by the current resistance to the concept of national service. After his stint in the CCC, the author returned to high school and graduated at the age of 21. He then served in World War II, and the GI Bill enabled him to earn a Master's Degree from the University of Wisconsin. The author's professional life was spent producing motion pictures in the Automotive Capital. He now resides with his wife, Mary, on a farm in Southwestern Minnesota.
